The Liberal Democrats have long supported maintaining the right to vote of expatriate UK citizens in UK national elections, by scrapping the current 15 year residence rule. A policy known as Votes for Life.
It makes no sense to us that a UK Citizen living abroad has their right to vote removed after 15 years. Wherever in the world life, family or career take you it does not reduce your interest in, nor commitment to, the UK and its well-being.
The current Elections Bill going through Parliament at the moment makes this a real possibility.
Its not a party matter. It’s a matter of right and wrong. And refusing to diminish the patriotism and loyalty of all Britons living abroad.
Help make it happen - letting your Westminster MP know that Votes for Life matters to you by writing or emailing them… contact details here.
By the way: on 13th October Liberal Democrats in Europe will be hosting an online event with Lord Paul Tyler, LibDem Constitutional Affairs Spokesperson in the House of Lords, discussing the Bill and its implications for overseas residents in more detail. More details can be found on the Events Tab.
