About the Roundtable

One of the major obstacles towards closer defence cooperation among EU member states is a highly fragmented market for military equipment. National armed forces often procure small batches of highly expensive systems which are not necessarily compatible with the ones neighbouring EU countries deploy. Scholars and political practitioners have looked at this problem from different angles during a recent project. At this event they will present their findings and discuss them with Brussels-based experts. Some key questions that are to be discussed include: What are the driving factors behind military cooperation? Will the EU’s newly established instruments like the EDF and PESCO lead to more efficiency in defence procurement? What is to be expected by the ‘Franco-German engine’? And should Central and Eastern European countries stop to ‘buy American’?

A roundtable discussion organised by the European Liberal Forum (ELF) with the support of the Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Freedom. Co-funded by the European Parliament. The European Parliament is not responsible for the content of the programme, or for any use that may be made of it.
