Lord Oates presents to LibDems in Europe on citizens' rights post Brexit

The rights of UK citizens living in the EU have never been top of the government's agenda and sometimes it can seem as if we have been completely forgotten. Jonny Oates' interventions in the House of Lords have reminded us that LibDem parliamentarians continue to press the government to behave better. We are pleased that he has agreed to give us his views and updates on the parliamentary position on this (and I am sure any other) issue of great interest to our members here.

Naturally this will be an all on-line event and connection details will be sent by email after you have RSVP'd. We have booked one hour which should give us plenty of time for a short presentation, Q&A's and debate. Any questions in advance should be sent to me.

NB: This event is at 20:00 CET (Brussels, Paris, Berlin etc.)

Jonny Oates was born in 1969 and educated at Marlborough College. He was the director of communications for the Liberal Democrats for the 2010 general election and chief of staff to Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg through the coalition government of 2010–15. Inspired by Michael Buerk’s world-famous broadcast from the Ethiopian famine, he ran away from home to Addis Ababa in 1985, hoping to help victims of the Ethiopian famine – an endeavour that, unsurprisingly, proved unsuccessful but from which he learnt many lessons that shaped his future career. He subsequently worked as a teacher in a rural school in Zimbabwe and as a political adviser in South Africa’s first post-apartheid parliament. He has been a member of the House of Lords since October 2015, where he focuses on climate change, international development and mental health.

His book I never promised you a rose garden has recently been published for those interested in finding out more about his political journey.
